ERA Holds Oyster Roast to Raise Money for the Theatre Project

web posted January 14, 2009
EDGEFIELD – Saturday, January 31 is the date!  From 1-4 PM, Chef Butler Derrrick will serve up fresh oysters and homemade chili in front of the old Edgefield Advertiser Building, soon to be a regional theatre and community center, to raise money to purchase the building, for which Edgefield Regional Arts (ERA) holds an option-to-purchase until the first of May.

The price of admission is $15 per person.  Children under 12 are invited free of charge.  Beer, wine and soft drinks will be sold separately; tea (and water) will be free.  Gloves and knives will be supplied, but if you have a treasured oyster knife, or a pair of oyster gloves, feel free to bring them with you.  Entertain your friends and neighbors with your oyster stories!  Get down!  Get messy!  Pry those little mouthfuls from their shells and feel them slither down your hungry throat! (Is this where the expression “Shucks!” came from?)

Tickets may be purchased from ERA members or at Paperwhites on Edgefield square before the event.  They may also be purchased “at the door.”  Drink up!  Toast the host!  Enjoy a bowl of chili on a chilly afternoon!  Wide community participation in The Theatre Project will help convince large government and corporate donors that the citizens of Edgefield County and its neighbors want the cultural benefits a regional theatre and community center can bring to them.

With a capacity of 362, the theatre will allow for legitimate theatre and movies, and will lend itself as well to graduations, lecture series, literary readings, choral and instrumental recitals and contests, dance programs, school plays, other community events of various kinds, and convenient meetings for groups both large and small.  Incorporated into the design of the lobby will be a series of kiosks to honor the building’s role in the history of The Edgefield Advertiser, the oldest continuously published newspaper in South Carolina.

So come one, come all! Support an exciting cause that will help make Edgefield a destination for tourists and residents across the CSRA for years to come.

A rain date will be announced, if necessary.

Edgefield Regional Arts (ERA) is an association of more than 50 artists and writers in and around Edgefield, South Carolina, which sponsors art exhibits, literary events, and community activities for the benefit of its members and the public.  Any artist interested in joining ERA may contact Pamela Urban-Moore at 803-637-6763.
