Aiken Regional Medical Centers Wins Award in 2006 National Health Information Awards Program

web posted April 13, 2007

AIKEN – Aiken Regional Medical Centers was selected as a winner in the 13th annual National Health Information Awards. This program recognizes the nation’s best consumer health information programs and materials.

The Cardiac Screening Program received a Merit Award for the Health Promotion/Disease and Injury Prevention Information category. Those involved with the production and design of the Cardiac Screening Program are Brenda Tolton, Aiken Regional’s Director of Business & Industry; Dr. Thomas P. Paxton, Dr. Don Pennington, and physicians and staff of Aiken Heart and Vascular Center. “ We could not conduct this program without the professional skill and commitment of the many Aiken Regional staff members. Together with the physicians, and staff of Aiken Heart and Cardiovascular Center, they provide the necessary complement of skills.”

That complement of skills represents many hospital services. Among those  services are nursing, cardiopulmonary, cardiovascular, imaging, registration, and volunteer services.

“We were delighted to participate in the National health Information Awards Program and were honored to be selected as a winner,” said Tolton. “Our winning entry was chosen from nearly 1,000 entries judged by a national panel of health information experts.”

The program was designed to address the high prevalence of cardiovascular disease in our geographical area. It has also helped Aiken Regional develop a strong relationship with neighboring businesses. “Many of our physicians recognize the needs resulting from cardiac-related diagnoses,” said Dr. Paxton.

According to Dr.Pennington, area physicians have seen how dramatically the Cardiac Screening Program has helped to address these issues. “This program identifies patients who are unaware they have the beginnings of a health problem developing.”

At the Cardiac Screening Event, a team of physicians, nurses and other health care professionals will staff various stations that check for build up of plaque in the vessel to the brain, check the size of the heart and valve, check blood pressure and blood circulation to the legs, check the electrical rhythm of the heart, and check to see if cholesterol and blood sugar levels are within normal range. Afterwards, each participant then meets with a nurse educator, and then a physician, both of whom provide a review of the participant’s personal results.

The National Health Information Awards Program is coordinated by the Health Information Resource Center, a national clearinghouse for consumer health information programs and materials. The Center, which houses a large collection of such public and private sector materials, promotes the distribution of accurate, timely consumer health information materials to professionals and managers in the field.
