Girls and Guns Equal Fun web posted May 31, 2007 PSA - EDGEFIELD – The National Wild Turkey Federation’s Edgefield Local chapter is hosting a Women in the Outdoors handgun defense and safety event at the Wild Turkey Center in Edgefield, S.C., June 9. Through the event, South Carolina residents can earn the required certification to apply for a South Carolina concealed weapons permit from expert instructors in a stress-free environment. “While crime rates have dropped considerably over the last couple of decades, it’s good for women to know how to defend themselves if they ever need to,” said Laurie Chandler, Women in the Outdoors regional coordinator. The class is limited to 50 participants and is open to women who are residents of South Carolina or own real property in South Carolina. It consists of classroom seminars covering South Carolina defense law, concealed carry law, NRA FIRST Steps Pistol course, conceal carry options and basic handgun cleaning, in addition to range qualification. There also will be a demonstration of self-defense handgun loads. Cost to attend is $100 for which participants will receive a continental breakfast, S.C. CWP certification, course materials, lunch, Women in the Outdoors membership and a subscription to Women In The Outdoors magazine. Participants will need to bring a safe, functioning handgun and 100 rounds of target ammunition in the same caliber of the handgun. They also need to have a basic understanding of the handgun they bring. During the event, there will be a silent auction and raffles featuring exclusive NWTF merchandise, and the Turkey Shoppe will be open for shopping opportunities during the day. “This event is about women learning skills and having fun,” said Matt Lindler, event committee chairman and instructor. “They’re going to learn handgun and self-defense skills, and have a good time doing it.” The NWTF’s Women in the Outdoor program has 40,000 members across the United States and Canada. It’s designed to help members develop outdoor skills and emphasizes the importance of wildlife management and the role of hunters in conservation. Registration for the event begins at 7:30 a.m. on June 9. For more information or to register for the event, contact Laurie Chandler at (864) 229-2893 or Matt Lindler at (803) 637-3106.
