“Birthing a Community- Fairfield County Midwives” exhibition to open
July 10

PSA - FAIRFIELD COUNTY – The Birthing a
Community is an exhibition on the history of midwifery in Fairfield
County. It covers midwifery from slavery to modern trends in prenatal
care and birthing in the county. The exhibition offers a brief tribute
to more than thirty midwives including Mrs. Verola Maple. Mrs. Maple is
the last of a generation of midwives still living in the county today.
The exhibition will open July 10, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. with a wine and
cheese reception.
All are welcome. The exhibition will run July 10, 2008 – December 31,
2008.
Included in the exhibition are
Tools of the trade dating back to the 1800s
Photos of midwives in training at Benedict College and the Penn School
Medical items belonging to Fairfield County’s own Drs Floyd, Buchanan,
and McCants.

Captured Moment Oral Histories, a partnership of Brown Studios and the
Fairfield County Museum will present a film on midwives featuring
interviews with their descendants

In celebration of families, women’s health, and healthy babies, the
Fairfield County Museum will host a series of talks and family days as
part of our Museum Without Walls programming. Please stay tuned

Fairfield County Museum is open Tuesday – Friday 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
and Saturday 10:00 a.m. -3:00p.m
