Edgefield County Red Cross begins fundraiser for hurricane relief

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted September 22, 2005

COUNTY – The Edgefield County Red Cross has announced a fund raiser that will kick off at the Jamboree at Strom Thurmond on Saturday, September 24, 2005 and will continue at Edgefield Youth Football League games which are played at the Bettis Academy Recreation Field. In addition the Edgefield County Red Cross will hold a fund raiser at the Edgefield Heritage Festival on October 14 and 15, 2005. Stacey Coleman, who volunteers with the Edgefield County Red Cross, said the funds would be used for the victims of Hurricane Katrina and those who will have to deal with Hurricane Rita on Saturday as well al local people in need.

Forgotten sometimes during such massive disasters like that seen on the Gulf Coast in the wake of Katrina is the local work the Edgefield County Red Cross does. “People think about the Red Cross and think about hurricanes and large disasters but we provide help to local people after fires or other such personal disasters,” Mr. Coleman said.

The money collected in the fundraisers will go towards helping those who will no doubt be facing similar destruction as Hurricane Rita closes in on the Texas coast on Saturday morning. Presently Hurricane Rita is the most powerful storm in decades with winds exceeding 175 mph. Mr. Colman said the Red Cross was already gearing up to provide assistance as soon as it is safe to enter the area after the storm.

The Edgefield County Red Cross can be reached to receive donations or requests to volunteer at (803) 637-3813 or write to American Red Cross, P.O. Box 360, Edgefield, SC 29824. “Anything people can do to help will be greatly appreciated,” Mr. Coleman said.
