July, 2005 Sawyer Alley 400 Mims Street (Corner of Mims and Calhoun St) Johnston SC 29832 Phone: 803-275-4471 Dining Review Team Upon entering we were seated immediately by the hostess. Our server, Joy, was prompt and informed us of the specials and took our orders for sweet tea within three minutes of being seated. With a wide choice of menu items the team chose to surf and turf the menu choosing the rib eye steak ($12.50) and the fried shrimp dinner (8.50). Joy returned with our salads inside of seven minutes of our arrival time. The salads were large and fresh as the ingredients were crisp and delicious. Within fifteen minutes of being seated our diners were served hot and the presentation was adequate. The steak, ordered rare, was in fact rare. Most establishments have a problem in determining doneness of rare and medium rare. The meat was tender and tasted wonderful. The baked potato was perfectly done, not hard or overcooked, a known “pet peeve” of one of our review team. The shrimp diner was also served hot and the baked potato was equally done. The shrimp were good but fell below our expectation. They were tasty and cooked to the proper tenderness and the breading was just slightly more than our team prefers. Still worthy of a compliment however. Owner Betsy Watson stopped by our table and conversed for a short time. She asked for our desert choices and endorsed the homemade peach cobbler made with fresh peaches delivered each Wednesday; grown and delivered personally by Larry Yonce. We passed on desert and we received our check moments later which we paid on our way out. Total time from entering to exiting was less than one hour. In all it was a wonderful experience. The wait staff and employees were all very friendly and eager to please. We saw many local friends while there and they all complimented the food they had eaten and stated they would return often. We share their opinion and plan to return on subsequent occasions for pure enjoyment, not business. Sawyer Alley, being a new enterprise, will no doubt be working through some growing pains as all new businesses do. Presentation of the dinners could use a bit more “flair” but the real test is always taste and Sawyer Alley recieves a more than passing grade of A. Edgefield Daily.com endorses Sawyer Alley for a casual and quaint dining experience away from the ordinary. We hope they prosper and have continued sucsess. The total ticket price of our meals was $26.50 before adding our gratuity.
