Local brilliant crook news Edgefielddaily.com web posted September 20, 2005 COUNTY – A collection of some of our favorite recent local brilliant crooks. Wasn’t me – On September 16, the South Carolina Highway Patrol was conducting a license check at the intersection of Slide Hill Road and Lake View Drive with the Johnston Police Department when officers noticed a car slow down as it approached the checkpoint. Johnston Police Officer Bryant was about to go after the vehicle when it turned into a residence and the man got out and walked towards the house. About fifteen minutes later a gentleman approached the officers and asked if they knew who had parked their car in the drive. Uh Oh! Looks like our bright guy outsmarted local law enforcement. Not so fast, Officer Bryant ran a check on the tag and found it belonged to a woman in Trenton and gave her a call. The woman stated her daughter had the car so police contacted her. She stated her boyfriend was driving the car and he had no driver’s license. A few minutes later Edgefield County Deputy Jimmy Smith, who was also at the checkpoint, saw the man walking a short distance away and he was stopped and questioned. He stated he was at a nearby apartment complex and left the keys in the car and had no idea how the car got there. Of course, being “very intoxicated” he stood by his story and to his surprise his girlfriend drove up and told police he was the one who had the car. Being unable to get to the bottom of the situation the car was towed and both parties were instructed to come to the Police Department the next day. No arrest was made. I’m not drunk, I’m high on beer – On September 12, 2005 a man was spotted staggering down the road as he walked. An officer approached the man and there was a “very strong odor of alcohol,” about him. When trying to give the man a sobriety test he could not even follow simple instructions. When the officer asked him why he couldn’t do as asked he stated he was “high on beer.” Steve Walker, 44, of Lanier Street in Johnston was given a ride to the Edgefield County Detention Center and booked on charges of “gross intoxication”. You just have to wonder – Why would you leave things in your car and your car unlocked? On September 16, 2005 a man called police to state someone had stolen a 12 gauge shot gun from his unlocked truck during the night. The person also took four packs of cigarettes. There were no fingerprints on the truck and the man did not know the serial number of the shot gun which had brown duct tape holding the broken stock together. There was also tape on the barrel. In addition, the next night a woman said she left her car unlocked and her pocketbook inside the car, of course with $250.00 in cash and her credit cards. Here’s your sign…
