Edgefield County School District Adequate Yearly Progress Reported
web
posted January 25, 2010
COUNTY – The Edgefield County School
District has received 2009 data on Adequate Yearly Progress in
compliance with the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Two schools,
Douglas Elementary and W. E. Parker Elementary met all of their
objectives, which gave them the status of having met Adequate Yearly
Progress.
All elementary schools and middle schools in the district showed
significant progress, and fell just short by missing 1-4 objectives.
Elementary schools not meeting AYP will be updating their instructional
strategies to improve their programs and the district will revisit
their instructional strategies to meet the needs of all children.
Merriwether Elementary and Johnston Elementary will offer parents
school of choice options.
In order to meet AYP this year, and as test score targets became
dramatically harder to achieve, South Carolina elementary and middle
schools must have had at least 58.8 percent of their students
proficient in English Language Arts. In math, at least 57.8 percent had
to be proficient.
In comparison to the 2008 data, the Edgefield County School District as
a whole clearly made a progressive report in meeting objectives.
The district as a whole reached six additional objectives showing
outstanding progress towards the Adequate Yearly Progress goal. In 2008
the district posted 19 out of 25 objectives reached. For the 2009 data
reporting, 23 out of 25 objectives were met which shows progress.
“We have thoroughly analyzed the 2009 data and feel that a pattern of
progress has developed in our schools,” said Dr. Mary R. Crenshaw,
Superintendent. She continued by noting that the areas falling short of
meeting an objective will be top priority as the districts develops
assistance. Also, an in-depth look at local data reporting to the state
to make sure information is accurate will be analyzed.
High school state goals jumped upward in 2009 from 52.3 percent to 71.3
percent proficient in English Language Arts and from 50 to 70 percent
proficient in math.
NCLB requires schools and districts to break out their performance data
into a number of student “subcategories” that include ethnicity,
special education, poverty and limited ability with English. The more
demographic categories a school has, the more goals it must meet. If
even one subcategory of students does not meet its goal for that year,
or if more than five percent of those students were not tested, the
school does not meet AYP for that year.
Elementary and middle schools can also miss AYP if their overall
attendance rate is lower than 94 percent. High schools miss AYP if
graduation rates decline from the previous year.
Below is a chart comparing the 2008 data with the 2009 data for
Edgefield County.
