Engaging the community in the pursuit of educational excellence is our focus

web posted January 31, 2007
By: Frank G. Roberson, Ph.D.
Asst. Superintendent, Edgefield County School District

PSA/ ECBOE – There is nothing more precious in our sight than the presence of children. And their development should claim our most focused attention and energy. Children are the nation's most valuable resources and the community's most reliable sustainer. What they become as adults is what the community becomes.

So we must nurture their development in such a way that when they are men and women, they are teachers, preachers, doctors, lawyers, engineers, mayors, governors, presidents, senators, assemblymen, congressmen and congresswomen, councilmen and councilwomen, clerks, administrative assistants, nurses, technicians, school leaders, college professors, scientists, inventors, good workers who show up on the job everyday, firemen, policemen, good neighbors, productive citizens, wholesome mamas and daddies and big mammas and pappas, that they be any and every thing that is good.

In a real sense, this is the reason we are here this morning -to nurture the development of our children, the best thing we have going for us and our future. And to do this development thing right, we are going to need the community and all the key players -the homes, the churches, the schools (both k-12 and colleges and universities), business and industry, average citizens, grandmother and grandfathers, aunts and uncles, civic and social groups (sororities and fraternities), social and human agencies, simply every useful person in the community.

This is our purpose and we envision that, at the end ofthe day (meaning when tomorrow comes, meaning when our children are grown and have children of their own), the quality of life for them and the community as a whole will be thriving even more than it is today (full of job opportunities, prosperity will be in every section ofthe county, industry will be beating paths over the United States to get to Edgefield, South Carolina because of its people, its schools, its churches, and the opportunities afforded its people.

So this morning, we convene the community for this expressed purpose and we are so delighted that you are here.
