School District Receives State Report Cards
web
posted February 25, 2009
COUNTY – The Edgefield County School
District received an Average Rating in both categories of Absolute
Rating and Growth Rating on the State Report Cards which were released
this past Friday. There were no school districts in the state to make
Adequate Yearly Progress.
“Our district falls into the 37.6% category of
districts across the state receiving Average for absolute ratings while
65.2% of districts fall into categories with below average or at risk
absolute ratings. 5.9% were good and 1.2% excellent in absolute
ratings,” said Dr. Mary R. Crenshaw, Superintendent and continued, “We
were pleased to have moved from Below Average in the Growth Rating
category to Average and to maintain Average in the Absolute Rating
area. The growth rating category is the measure of a school’s progress
towards attaining and/or maintaining higher levels of performance. This
category compares student test scores from one year to the next and is
based on mathematical formulas set by the Education Oversight
Committee.”
Local Schools and their ratings received for the
2008 report are as follows:
Douglas Elementary: Absolute Rating-Below Average;
Growth Rating-Below
Average. (2007 – Absolute Rating-At Risk; Growth
Rating-At Risk)
Johnston Elementary: Absolute Rating-Below Average;

The system’s increasing performance targets change
from year to year for schools, thus making the increase for higher
ratings harder to achieve. While overall performance shows improvement
in most grade levels in the district, the increase in performance
targets can alter ratings.
“The district is now in the process of analyzing
weak areas performance and will move towards implementation assistance
to those target areas,” said Dr. Crenshaw and continued “Our schools
are focused on the areas of weaknesses, as well as offering advanced
opportunities and a continued rigorous curriculum for all students.”
