Citizen’s group launches online petition in effort to remove school
superintendent
web
posted May 28, 2009
COUNTY – A citizen’s group has started an
online petition in an effort to encourage the Edgefield County School
Board to terminate the contract of Edgefield County School
Superintendent Dr. Mary Rice-Crenshaw. The group, spearheaded by local
businessmen Charles Kemp and Jim Jackson, operate under the name
“Edgefield County Citizen Taskforce Against Corruption in Education”
and has launched a website with an online petition seeking Dr.
Crenshaw’s removal.
The petition leads off with the statement, “We the taxpayers, parents,
and teachers of the Edgefield County School District (ECSD) do hereby
present this petition to the Edgefield County School District Board of
Trustees respectfully requesting the immediate termination of the
contract of Superintendent Dr. Mary Rice-Crenshaw.”
Mr. Jackson and Mr. Kemp have been steady fixtures at many recent
School Board meetings asking pointed questions they say go unanswered.
The wording of the petition continues, “We believe the safety and
welfare of our children has been jeopardized in direct contravention
and violation of the Safe Schools Act by ignoring or mishandling of
violence and/or the threat of violence in our schools; the ESCD is not
being effectively managed; the ESCD budget is being severely
mismanaged; the employees, citizens, and parents are not being treated
in a respectful manner; the teacher workforce has been coerced,
intimidated, and misled into accepting to return a portion of their
salary to account for budget shortfalls; the morale and work
environment has been significantly undermined; the quality of education
of our students has been considerably jeopardized by continuous bad
decisions; the appearance and highly questionable conflict of interest
between the Superintendent’s position in the ECSD and the private
holdings of a company closely affiliated or associated with conducting
business in this county; and more importantly, members of the Edgefield
County School Board have been deceived, misinformed, and even
circumvented in the adoption and promulgation of policies, procedures,
and practices that are inconsistent with ensuring each citizen student
is guaranteed, and receives, a quality education. Moreover, this is in
direct violation of the Superintendents contractual obligations, and
thus should be terminated without prejudice.”
The statement ends, “We stand together with a common voice in
requesting this action. The taxpayers, parents, and teachers, of the
Edgefield County School District respectfully request the immediate
removal of Superintendent Dr. Mary-Rice Crenshaw, for the safety of our
children, the betterment of this county, our schools, the community,
and the education of our children.”
The online petition can be found at http://www.firecrenshaw.com/
In earlier conversations with Mr. Jackson he stated that they were
aware the petition has no binding legal authority over the school
board. Jackson stated they hoped to garner enough signatures in an
effort to “put pressure on the school board” to vote to withdraw Cr.
Crenshaw’s contract.
