School Board fills administration openings Tuesday night

JOHNSTON – The Edgefield County School
Board voted to fill new administrative positions Tuesday night on a 6-1
vote on each hire with School Board member Brad Covar voting in
opposition to all hires. Patty Gibbs, of Edgefield County, was named as
the new Administrative Assistant at Merriwether Elementary, Betsy
Jones, of Greenville, was named as Assistant Principal at JET Middle
School, and Dr. Karen Cohen, of Clinton, was tapped for the assistant
principal at Merriwether Middle School.
Ms. Gibbs has been in education of over 15 years and is currently a
teacher at Merriwether Elementary for the past 12 years. She has a
Bachelors in Elementary Education from Miami University in Ohio, a
Masters of Education from USC-Aiken, and is currently pursuing her
Education Specialist from USC-Columbia.
Betsy Jones hails from Westcliffe Elementary in Greenville County were
she served as an Administrative Assitant. She holds a Bachelors in
Education from USC and a Masters in School Leadership from Clemson
University. She has been in education for 10 years.
Dr. Karen Cohen, tapped as the new Assistant Principal at Merriwether
Middle School has served as an Assistant Principal for Clinton High
School in Lauren County with 10 years experience in the school systems.
She has a Bachelors from Howard University, a Masters in Educations,
and a Doctorate in Education Leadership from Clark Atlanta
University.
The recommendations for the new hires came from the principals at the
respective schools and were presented to the board for approval.
