EIA Grants Received By Local Schools

COUNTY – Four Edgefield County Schools are
listed among schools from around that state that have been approved for
EIA Teacher Awards.The schools receiving the awards are: Johnston
Elementary-recipient Kay Campbell, Project: Living History in the
amount of $1,999; JET Middle School-recipient Debbie Courtney, Project:
CSI - Character Seen Inaction in the amount of $5,400; Strom Thurmond
High School, recipient Sandra Gladden, Project-Seeing is Believing in
the amount of $1,875 and W. E. Parker Elementary-recipient Angela
McLaurin, Project Polish and Publish!, in the amount of $1,998.
The General Assembly provides funding for the awards to promote best
practices, creativity and innovation in the classroom. The Grants
Program in the South Carolina Department of Education administers the
program, and independent reviewers scored 851 individual and group
project applications to arrive at the final selections list. The awards
total $1,212,099 for schools in both rural and urban communities.
“These projects reflect innovative approaches to educating the children
of South Carolina,” said State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex. “I
commend these teachers for taking the lead in matching innovative
approaches to their schools’ needs.”
Dr. Mary R. Crenshaw, Superintendent of Edgefield County Schools said,
“These local teachers are applauded for their interest in writing and
applying for a teacher EIA Grant to help implement special projects in
their schools and classrooms.”
The EIA Teacher Awards program supports practices and procedures aimed
at improving instruction. Awards may be used to pay for projects
including: Assessments of students performance; activities that help
parents reinforce their child’s learning at home; computer-assisted
instruction; techniques for motivating and rewarding student
achievement; techniques for improving student’s study skills; and
innovative teaching strategies, activities and materials to meet the
needs of specific groups of students.
