Dump at JET, and troubles, deeper than first reported

web posted August 19, 2009

EDGEFIELD – The illegal dump that the Edgefield County School District had been using for at least five years has been cleaned out and covered over with dirt, at least for now. Director Thom Berry, with DHEC in Columbia, said Tuesday that there is a chance the pit would have to be unearthed, depending on the outcome of lab results. Dir. Berry also stated cleanup crews removed debris from the dumpsite to a depth of “between 15 and 18 feet”.

“The material removed below was similar to that found above,” Dir. Berry said. “They (the Edgefield County School District) hired a company to clean it up and they removed between 5 and 6 large roll back containers of debris.” Large commercial roll back containers carry between 30 and 40 yards of debris each meaning at least 150 cubic yards of material were removed from the pit.

Some of the debris is still located at the site including a pile of tires, another of shingles, and other various items waiting to be properly disposed. Pioneer Land Clearing, Berry said, was contracted by the school district to do the job. Calls to Superintendent Mary Crenshaw to ascertain the cost of the clean up were unsuccessful.

After the clean up of the illegal pit style dump, Dir. Berry said DHEC advised the school district they could leave the remaining pit uncovered and supervised until lab tests of several samples taken at the site could be processed, or they could backfill the pit, which they did. If the lab results show contamination the site would have to be dug back up and any contaminated soil removed and properly disposed. “We took samples from some of the materials (in the dump) and soil samples,” Berry said.

With similar illegal debris found beneath the exposed portion of the dump site, and at stated at depths of “15 to 18 feet” having to be dug up, EdgefieldDaily.com asked directly if that ran counter to Facilities Director James Courtney’s claim that nothing was ever buried at the site. “It’s hard to say right now,” Dir. Berry said. “It (the pit) could have been that deep and dirt and soil could have washed into the hole when it rained and buried it over time.”

When asked about possible fines Dir. Berry said it was premature to speculate. “We’ll see what the lab results are and go from there.” Berry said DHEC’s involvement in the dumpsite was far from being over.

In addition to the unknown costs for the cleanup, excavation, disposal, and transport of the materials, the school district has also hired an engineering consulting firm by the name of Davis and Floyd out of Greenwood to help them deal with the dump. The costs of their services are unknown at this time.

EdgefieldDaily.com will continue to follow the story we broke on the case and have more reports as information becomes available.
