Strom Thurmond High School 2008 Seniors Remain Above National Average on SAT Math Component

COUNTY – The 2008 SAT scores have been released by the State Department of Education and College Board. This is the third year for data from the newly redesigned SAT which now includes a writing section, tougher math problems and more reading analysis. It takes 45 minutes longer, a total of nearly five hours, including breaks, to complete the test.

The overall mean scores for Edgefield County, which consist of both Strom Thurmond High School and Fox Creek High School, were reported as: Critical Reading – 478, Math 510 and Writing 459. The Average composite score for the district in 2008 is 1,447.

At Strom Thurmond High School the Class of 2008 posted a score of 483 in Critical Reading as compared to the state score of 488 and  the national score 502. In the Writing Component STHS 2008 seniors posted 469 in the writing component as compared with the state score 476 and national score 494.     Strom Thurmond High School 2008 seniors posted an average score of 529 on the Math section of the SAT testing, which is above the state math score of 497 and the national math score of 515. The composite score for Strom Thurmond High School is 1,481.

At Fox Creek High School, mean scores for Critical Reading-467, Math-468 and Writing-435 yielded a composite score of 1,370.

“Compared to other districts around our state, Edgefield County has an above average composite score,” said Dr. Mary R. Crenshaw and continued, “Out of 85 districts reporting, Edgefield is in the top 30 ranking.”

“As in the past, as well as the future, SAT/ACT test taker scores will vary from year to year. We will constantly monitor the progress of students in the 2009 testing cycle and key in on areas of needed attention,” the local Superintendent said and concluded, “The SAT/ACT prep team teachers will continue to strengthen instruction for each individual student preparing to take the test.”
