Strom Thurmond Seniors out Rank Nation on the SAT

web posted August 29, 2007
COUNTY – For the first time in history college bound seniors at Strom Thurmond High School out performed students across the nation on the SAT, the nations most prestigious measure of academic achievement.

“The Class of 2007 is to be highly celebrated for seriously engaging in their academic studies for the past six years and most especially the last three years of their high school career. To be equally celebrated are the teachers who designed lessons and learning opportunities for students to gain the knowledge and skills needed to perform well on this national measure,” said Dr. Frank G. Roberson, Interim Superintendent for Edgefield County Public Schools.

Most of these students are beginning their first week in classes at some of the nation’s finest colleges and universities. “It is rewarding to know that our students are prepared and able to compete with students across the nation,” Roberson noted.

Not only did the students exceed the national average by 31 points, they out performed students across the nation in all three areas of the test. (Critical Reading, Mathematics and Writing). These students also outperformed their peers in the state of South Carolina by 83 points, as well as outperforming them in the three test areas.

The Class of 2007 posted a SAT score of 1540 on all three areas combined. The state score is 1459 and the national group score is 1511. The combined scores of Critical Reading and Mathematics, which are reported to colleges and universities, tallied 1037 for Strom Thurmond High School, 1017 for the nation and 984 for the state. STHS improved SAT scores by 41points locally, 20 points nationally and 53 points on the state level from 2006 data.

“We are very pleased with the educational system in Edgefield County. These results reflect the enormous hard work of the teachers, the level of consistent engagement and serious focus of our students on their academic studies and the support and encouragement that is evident in our parents and community partners,” Dr. Roberson said.

“These results document that students are seriously engaged in their academic studies, and that teachers are holding students to high expectations in all content areas by expecting above average performance from all students,” Roberson said and continued, “Nothing can substitute for positive and effective interactions between teaching and learning when it comes to student achievement.”
