Middle School Students in Edgefield County Defy the Odds

web posted September 8, 2007
EDGEFIELD – State and national trends show that middle school students (grades 6, 7 and 8) do not perform as well as other students on achievement tests. However, this appears not to be the case in Edgefield County based on recent PACT results. Middle School students in Edgefield County defied the odds and showed increases at each grade level in reading and mathematics. Reading and mathematics are used to determine progress for No Child Left Behind.

“Not only did middle school students show an increase, students in grade three performed better than average in reading and mathematics,” said Dr. Frank Roberson, Interim Superintendent, and continued, “Grade three is the first year that the state test is administered to students. 91% of the third grade students met the standards in reading and 84.4% met the standards in mathematics.” Students were also tested in science and social studies. Improvement was shown in 67% of these areas.

“Over two-thirds of third grade students performed at proficient or advanced levels which is the NCLB standard. Also encouraging was the progress shown towards closing the achievement gap between ethnic groups,” Dr. Roberson noted and continued, “As we are pleased with the increase in performance at four of the six grade levels tested, we continue to have work to do at grades 4 and 5 where a decrease in achievement was noted. This drop can be attributed to testing all students on grade level regardless of academic challenges.” Dr. Roberson emphasized that instructional measures are already in place to provide the necessary support for all students to perform at desired levels.

“This is tremendous and remarkable achievement,” said Dr. Roberson and continued “We are seeing these positive results because of effective teaching, increased instructional support and supervision by school administrators, and support from parents and community partners. Schools will continue to infuse learning support for students across the curriculum which includes both basic skills and extra curricular areas (special interest).

“Edgefield County students out preformed students across the state in over 70% of the areas tested. This is a commendable achievement to be noted among our students,” Dr. Roberson said in closing.
