More Schools Meet Federal NCLB Standards in Edgefield County

web posted October 31, 2007
COUNTY – More schools in Edgefield County met the National No Child Left Behind standards this year. Johnston Elementary, Merriwether Elementary and W. E. Parker Elementary schools met 100% of the US Department of Education objectives. Last year only one school met 100% of the objectives.

It is equally important to note that two of the schools, (Strom Thurmond High School and Fox Creek Charter High School) were only one objective away from meeting 100% of the standards. School District records reflect that these two schools did meet 100% of the objectives and the district is currently working with the State Department of Education to see if it is possible to reconcile the differences. If these differences are able to be reconciled, a total of five schools will have met AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress).

Six of the eight schools in Edgefield County met student performance standards. The following information shows the percent of standards met by each school in the Compliance Index:

Percent of Standards Met-Compliance Index
Douglas Elementary                 62%
Johnston Elementary               100%
Merriwether Elementary           100%
W.E. Parker Elementary          100%
JET Middle                               62%
Merriwether Middle                    89%
Strom Thurmond High School     94.7%
Fox Creek Charter High School   89%

“The success of all our schools towards meeting these rigorous federal standards can be directly attributed to effective teaching and the instructional leadership skills of our principals. We also see evidence of parental and community involvement reflected in the success of our schools,” said Dr. Frank Roberson, Interim Superintendent.

“The district is definitely meeting a higher number of standards as required in the NCLB legislation as indicated in the compliance index of each school in this district,” Dr. Roberson stated and continued. Schools are looking at the objectives that were not met and are developing action plans to address them.

“The results of this year’s performance are very encouraging and we anticipate this trend extending into further years,” Dr. Roberson concluded.
