Church thefts cross county lines web posted January 23, 2007 COUNTY – Edgefield County churches escaped being targeted by the prolific church bandit this weekend after striking eight churches in less than a week in the county. Though that is good news for Edgefield County churchgoers, it was bad news for neighboring Aiken County in the Ridge Spring - Monetta area where four similar thefts were reported over the weekend. Though the exact locations of the similar thefts were not immediately available, an Edgefield County Sheriff’s Investigator met with Aiken County authorities to compare evidence collected in local thefts due to the similar circumstances. The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office, and local Police Departments, has been patrolling local churches in the midst of the spree. A list of all churches in the county has been distributed to Sheriff’s Deputies, numbering almost 100. The thefts, first considered to be vandalism, have now been upgraded to grand larceny due to the dollar amount of damages being done during the thefts. Area churches have suffered in excess of $50,000 in damages in the recent crime spree. No dollar amount of damages were available for the churches in Aiken County, just over the county line from Johnston. For
