Jailer arrested for providing contraband to inmates

web posted January 24, 2007

EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield County Jailer has found himself on the other side of the bars on Tuesday morning. James H. Brooker, 26, of North Augusta turned himself in at the Detention Center for providing contraband to inmates. The arrest stems from a several week investigation by the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office and SLED.

Cpl. Robbie Harter, Information Officer for the Sheriff’s Office, said Brooker was allowing inmates access to his cell phone to make phone calls, “Anything an inmate receives that isn’t issued by the facility is considered contraband.”

Sheriff Adell Dobey said, “Law Enforcement Officers are held to a higher standard than any other professional in the county and they should be. This type of conduct will not be tolerated by any employee of the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office.”

Mr. Brooker was booked into custody and later released on bond. No trial date was available. He had been a jailer since July of 2006. All Detention Center jailers are Class 2 Law Enforcement Officers.
