web posted February 22, 2006

EDGEFIELD – Less than 24 hours of being taken into custody, the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office said Maurice Kenneth Wilson committed suicide at approximately 1:15 pm on Tuesday at the Edgefield County Detention Center. An ambulance arrived at the Detention Center around 1:25 pm. Several Sheriff’s Deputies also responded to the scene and the Detention Center was placed on lock-down.

Mr. Wilson, 32, was being held on a charge of murder for the stabbing death of his wife, Gwendolyn Wilson, 25. He turned himself into Laurens County Authorities Monday night. The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office transported Mr. Wilson back to Edgefield late Monday night where he was booked at the Detention Center around midnight.

Edgefield County Sheriff’s Public Information Officer Cpl. Robbie Harter said the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident. Cpl. Harter did not disclose the method in which Mr. Wilson killed himself citing the ongoing investigation; however, it has been reported that Mr. Wilson hung himself. It is the first suicide at the newly remodeled Detention Center. The last death at the jail was said to have been about fifteen years ago.
