Accused killer's death does not end investigation
web posted February 23, 2006

EDGEFIELD – With the recent suicide of Maurice Wilson, accused of the murder of his wife Gwendolyn Wilson, most people would think the case would be closed as far as the Sheriff’s Office is concerned. That is a misconception according to the Sheriff’s Office. Officials at the Sheriff’s Office and Investigators say their work is just beginning.

The original crime of murder must still be investigated and solved, even if the accused is now deceased. Chief Investigator Randy Doran is still pursuing the case as actively as the day it was reported.

“We still have to follow up on all the leads,” Investigator Doran said, just as if no one has been arrested. That includes interviewing neighbors, family, and those connected to the Wilson family home and the activities that took place in the days preceding the homicide. South Carolina Law Enforcement Agents have been called in to investigate Mr. Wilson’s suicide at the Detention Center, but the murder investigation continues in earnest by the Sheriff’s Office.

Autopsy reports from the Newberry Crime Lab are not expected for a few more days on the death of Mrs. Wilson. The reports on Mr. Wilson’s death are not expected until later next week.
