Investigators release name, picture of burglary suspect

web posted March 21, 2009
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Randy Doran said Friday they have issued arrest warrants for the man they say is responsible for several recent burglaries of self-storage units. Steven Luther Rodgers, 31, of Waterloo, SC, is wanted for one count of burglary in the third degree and grand larceny. “That’s all we have right now,” Inv. Doran said, “but we have multiple pending charges for burglary and grand larceny.” He is wanted in Laurens County on at least one count of forgery.

Video surveillance cameras captured Rodgers’ truck twice entering the gated area empty and then leaving with a riding lawnmower on one occasion and a 4x4 ATV on another. After the last theft a review of the day’s video footage showed Rodgers coming to the facility in a car and pulling a motorcycle out of a storage room, working on it a short time, and then leaving. That gave investigators one of their best clues.

Rodgers was found to have rented a storage unit under a false name and address. After investigating the description of the motorcycle they discovered a Harley Davison motorcycle stolen from a storage unit in Greenwood, Inv. Doran said. That was enough to get a search warrant and confirmed the stolen motorcycle. (Left)

As more evidence was gathered, photos of Rodgers were given to SLED who matched them up with a drivers license photo and lead investigators to his true identity. Arrest warrants were issued on Friday for his arrest.

Inv. Doran said it is unknown if Mr. Rodgers is responsible for several storage units burglarized recently in Edgefield. Several area law enforcement agencies are investigating his possible link to similar crimes in Greenwood, Saluda, and Laurens Counties. Greenwood County will most likely issue a warrant for the theft of the motorcycle.

Several owners of other storage units at the Trenton Self Storage location have been contacted about their units being burglarized but have not met with investigators to take an inventory to determine what is missing.

An arrest is expected by this weekend. The case is still actively under investigation and additional charges will be filed once the investigation has been completed.

An accomplice in the theft of the ATV has not been identified at this time.
