Sheriff's Office makes arrest in suspected arson case web posted March 27, 2007 EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest in a suspected arson case they have been investigating since last week. Courtney Blake Simpkins, 20, of the 100 block of Community Road was taken into custody and charged with arson in the third degree. Mr. Simpkins arrest stems from a reported car fire around noon on Sunday March 18 which brought the County Line Fire Department and Edgefield County Deputies to the scene. The car, a 2000 Dodge Stratus, was parked behind the house and was smoking. According to police reports the fire was out due to a lack of oxygen as a result of the windows being rolled up. When the car doors were opened the deputy reported a strong odor of gasoline coming from the car. An Investigator called to the scene recovered two burned matches from seats in the car. The car was impounded as a “crime scene” and was stored at the Sheriff’s Impound Lot for further investigation. As a result of the investigation and the evidence collected a warrant for the arrest of Mr. Simpkins was issued. He was arrested on Wednesday and has been released on bond. No court date was provided. For
