Sheriff's Office solves two burglaries within days web posted March 31, 2007 EDGEFIELD – A 22-year-old Edgefield man is behind bars for a Magistrate Court sentence and facing additional charges from two reported burglaries that took place this week on Plum Branch Road. Anthony Christian Smith, 22, of the 600 block of Addison Street, Edgefield was in Magistrate Court facing a charge of malicious injury to real property that took place earlier this month in the Town of Edgefield. He was found guilty and sentenced to 30 days in jail on Thursday. Shortly thereafter Mr. Smith’s troubles began to grow, as did the charges against him. Mr. Smith informed the judge he had driven to court and his truck was parked on the Town Square. Judge Carpenter ordered that the vehicle be towed and its contents inventoried. While a Sheriff’s Deputy complied with the order he found what was believed to be marijuana on the floorboard of the truck. A warrant for possession of marijuana was obtained and served on Mr. Smith at the jail later the same day. An ongoing investigation into two reported burglaries on Plum Branch Road also led Sheriff’s Investigators to Mr. Smith and he was questioned. Investigators said Mr. Smith was fairly cooperative and most of the lumber stolen in one of the crimes was recovered at an undisclosed location. The electronics taken from a second home were not recovered. By the end of the day Friday Mr. Smith was served warrants for burglary in the third degree and petit larceny for the alleged theft of lumber from one of the homes. A charge of grand larceny was placed against Mr. Smith in the alleged theft of electronics from a second home where damages and reported items stolen exceeded $1,000. The cases are still under investigation and it is unknown if additional charges or arrests may be forthcoming. Smith is currently being held at the County Detention Center on a 30-day Magistrate Court sentence and a combined $15,000 surety bond for the most recent charges. Even if Mr. Smith meets his current bond obligations he will remain in custody until the 30-day sentence is served jail records show. For
