Deputy cleared of fault in three-car crash web posted April 11, 2007 EDGEFIELD – An Edgefield County Deputy involved in a three-car collision that took place on Sweetwater Road on Monday has been cleared of being at fault in the crash. According to the result of the investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol the driver of the pick-up truck was cited in the collision for failure to yield the right of way. According to the report by the Highway Patrol the Deputy was following the fertilizer truck at a safe distance for a period of time on Sweetwater Road before reaching a legal passing area. At that time the deputy made a legal pass of the truck and had established himself in the passing lane. The deputy cleared the first truck and was in the processes of clearing the second vehicle, the pick-up, when that driver began a left turn, striking the patrol car in the read quarter panel causing him to lose control and crashing. Due to the deputy having establishing himself in the passing lane and overtaking both vehicles the driver of the pick-up has to yield to the right of way of a passing motorist and failed to do so police said. The driver of the pick-up truck vehemently refutes the charge. The case has been referred to the Magistrate Court but no court date was provided. The deputy is currently recovering from minor injuries received in the crash caused by the impact and a rather large burn to the right forearm from the deploying airbag. A supervisor stated the deputy would be returning to duty by the end of the week. The patrol car, at last report, would probably be considered a total loss due to the amount of damage received in the crash. For
