![]() Paid for by the Candidate Grand larceny at Merriwether church site solved, two charged within days web posted Apri 22, 2006 MERRIWETHER – The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office made quick work of a grand larceny theft reported from construction site of the Big Stevens Creek Baptist Church on Martintown Road in Merriwether. Over the past weekend an industrial welding machine used in the construction of the church’s new Family Life Center was found missing when workers returned to work on Monday morning. The welder was suspended in the air with a large forklift when the workers left. The persons responsible evidently lowered the welder and drove away with it. The tire tracks were obvious at the site. The value of the welder was placed at $8,000. Edgefield County Sheriff’s Investigator’s began the investigation on Monday and within a day had solid suspects and leads. The welder was located on Tuesday in Aiken County and recovered. The suspects, Billy Ray Wright, 58, and Joey Scott Norris, 24, both of the 100 block of Owl Branch Road in Ridge Spring, were contacted and informed of their pending arrest and a date was set for the two men to turn themselves in to authorities. By Thursday, both men were in custody at the Edgefield County Detention Center and booked on charges of grand larceny. Both were released on bond. For
