Case closed: country club fire investigation leaves cause "undetermined" web posted April 28, 2007 EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office and SLED have closed their investigations on the fire at the North Augusta Country Club that completely destroyed the building. “The point of origin is unknown and the cause of the fire is undetermined,” Sheriff’s Corporal Robbie Harter said Friday, “the case is closed”. The April 16 fire had completely engulfed the clubhouse when the first fire trucks arrived around 5 am that morning. At least five area fire departments responded to the scene. Investigators initially called the fire suspicious but were unable to examine what they believed to be the point of origin due to the area being covered by a very large concrete slab that fell from the second story dining room floor during the fire. A witness across the street from the fire said he did not notice anything out of the ordinary when he took his dogs out that morning around 4:30, a short time later he came out due to his dogs barking and saw the fire. Investigators did not offer an explanation for the cause of the fire spreading so quickly. Firefighters battled the blaze for over four hours before bringing it under control then extinguishing the flames. Cpl. Harter said, "no indication of criminal activity was uncovered during our investigation." A temporary clubhouse has been placed on the grounds of the country club and all the golf carts have been replaced. The golf course is still open for play. For
