web posted May 24, 2005

Steven Louis Barns, 26, was arrested by the Edgefield County Sheriff's Department on  May 18 for the murder of an Augusta teen off Rainbow Falls Road in 2002.

The Augusta teen, Samuel Sturrup, 16,  was found dead after a local resident's pet brought home the skull which lead for a massive hunt for the body. After the investigation a total of six individuals were charged with assorted crimes, among them were
Antonio Griffen, 21, Richard Cave, 22,  Alexander Hunsburger, 26, Julio Hunsburger, Charlene Thatcher, 21, and Steven Barnes.

All have been held in custody from related crimes in Georgia stemming from the murder and kidnapping charges. Barnes was returned to Edgefield County Wednesday to face capitol murder charges.

According to the Edgefield County Sheriff's Department it is believed two guns were used in the murder and neither has been found to date. The victim was shot six times, allegedly once by each of the individuals charged in his death.

Barnes is awaiting a trial date and court appointment of two defenders for the capitol  murder charges. The Solicitors Office stated they would seek the death penalty in the case.
