Edgefield Deputy nabs suspected car thief from McCormick County

web posted May 26, 2006

NORTHSIDE – The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office was notified by McCormick County Dispatchers Wednesday afternoon of a suspect vehicle that had driven away from a location in McCormick County. An Edgefield County Deputy in the area of Martintown Road and Red Hill Road spotted the 1983 Ford truck and initiated a traffic stop at the intersection. The two men were asked to step out of the vehicle and were cuffed for investigative and “officer safety”.

Additional officers, including investigators, arrived at the scene a short time later. The two men, identified as Dennis Holloway, 30 of Howard Road, Augusta Georgia, and the driver, Jessie Wallace Stevens, 35, of Casalina Drive in Edgefield County were both questioned at the scene.

Found inside the truck on the passenger’s side was a plastic baggie which contained several “rocks” of “crack (cocaine)”. Mr. Holloway admitted to deputies he purchased the drugs in Augusta for $100 and that he and Mr. Stevens had smoked some of the drugs prior to being stopped. Deputies searched Mr. Holloway and found $2,412 in cash in his wallet and in his pockets.

McCormick County Sheriff Reid arrived on the scene and said the truck driven by Mr. Stevens has been involved in several stolen vehicles in McCormick County, which is still under investigation. Mr. Stevens said the truck belonged to his brother; however, the truck had no tag. A check of the VIN number showed the vehicle was registered to an Auto Sales company in Aiken.

The two men were arrested and transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center where Mr. Stevens was charged with manufacture/possession of schedule I, II, III drugs, no proof of ownership, and no proof of insurance. Mr. Holloway was charged with manufacture/possession of schedule I, II, III drugs.
