Sheriff' SVU Investigator joins SLED

web posted May 30, 2007
EDGEFIELD – While everyone’s attention was on graduation this past Friday, very few noticed another graduation, of sorts, when the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office saw one of their Investigators leave work for the last time. Investigator Robin Newton, of the Special Victims Unit, has accepted a job with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division as a Special Investigator. “I am very much looking forward to what is ahead of me,” Investigator Newton said.

Newton joined the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office in March of 2004 after serving with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Office. She began her career with the SC Dept. of Probation, Parole, and Pardon Services in Aiken in May of 1999.

Working for Sheriff Adell Dobey was, “like one huge training exercise everyday and I thank the Sheriff for that opportunity,” Inv. Newton said.

As a Special Victims Investigator Newton worked some of the more emotional cases, rape, child molestation, abuse, incest, and other similar crimes on a daily basis. Among those are two Inv. Newton said stood out in her mind. The most recent case being Belinda Cooper who is accused of not only abusing at least one of the foster children placed in her care, but video taping some of the beatings.

Another case was said to be a defining moment, “watching Michael Harris be sent to prison for life for raping, molesting, and impregnating his own daughter,” Newton said.

Inv. Newton said she has not been briefed on what her duties with SLED will be but said she has been assigned to the Midlands Division which also covers Edgefield County.

The open investigators position will be filled from within the ranks of the Sheriff’s Office and the open position of the deputy will have to be replaced. No official release of who will be replacing Investigator Newton has been made at this time.

On some of the things that guide her Newton said there were several “words” she lives by and among them were, “The truth hurts. If you don't want to know, don't ask,” and, “Don't stand in your own way.”

Newton said she has made many “life-long friends” during her time here and would be returning often, including testifying in the upcoming trial of Belinda Cooper which is tentatively set for June.

EdgefieldDaily.com wishes Special Agent Newton well in her new position. She was an asset to the Sheriff’s Office and the community.
