Sheriff’s Department to make arrest in gun thefts

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted May 31, 2005

The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department is preparing charges on a 15 year old Fox Creek High School student in a month old robbery case of guns stolen from a Merriwether residence on April 25, 2005. Investigator Chris Ashton said a total of nine guns were stolen from a Roper Court residence in Currytown Station in April and they suspected the juvenile from the beginning, “We were pretty sure it was him but couldn’t prove it,” until a break in the case in the last week. Investigator Ashton said three rifles, one rifle/shotgun combination, two shotguns, and three handguns have been recovered.

Deputies searched the home of the suspect, who is currently being held on three charges which stemmed from an episode at Fox Creek High School, and found the guns hidden in the attic. Ashton also said they have another one or two, “people of interest,” they are interviewing in relation to the theft. One gun is still reported missing and officers are unsure where it may be.

Investigator Ashton said they believe this was an isolated crime of opportunity and do not believe the juvenile was involved in other recent break-ins. Ashton also said the parents were trying to get the juvenile released so he could attend summer school at Fox Creek High School. “He won’t be going to summer school,” the investigator said, "he'll be facing 2nd degree burglary and grand larceny (over $5000) charges," in addition to the three charges the juvenile is being held on which include a drug charge.
