Arsonist gets 12 years for Johnston fire

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted June 29, 2005

Brent Allen Aiken, 20, last reported residence of the 900 block of Croft Avenue in Aiken, was found guilty on June 17, 2005 of first- degree arson charges for the fire that destroyed an old cotton gin owned by Larry Satcher Sr. on Thanksgiving Day in 2004 in Johnston.

Mr. Aiken was scheduled to have his trial in last week’s General Sessions Court. Instead a guilty plea was entered and he received a twelve year sentence for the crime. Credit for time served will be given.

The old cotton gin housed a peach stand while it was under renovations. Neighbors said Mr. Satcher was fixing the building up to supplement their retirement. The building was destroyed beyond repair and court officials said the building was uninsured.

The arrest of Brent Aiken by the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department in the first week of December 2004 led to many other revelations and criminal charges in Aiken County. There Mr. Aiken was charged, along with Jerry R. Bell, 20; William G. Bell, 18, of Billingsley, Ala.; and Henry A. Green, 17, of Aiken SC, with two counts of first-degree burglary and one count of second-degree burglary each.

In Aiken County Mr. Aiken’s home was found to contain stolen goods from a break-in at Wright's Mill Grocery in Aiken that occurred on Nov. 11 and again on Nov. 24, 2004. Mr. Aiken, along with Mr. Bell and Mr. Green were charged with the October 5, 2004 mutilation of a bull from Mr. Otto McCarthy’s farm on Wire Road in Aiken County. Also charged in that crime were Barbara J. Rogers, 37, of Croft Avenue in Aiken and Emily Johnson, 20, of Alabama.

Mr. Aiken, Mr. Bell, Mr. Smith, and Ms. Rogers all shared the same Croft Avenue address.

The break in all cases stemmed from the investigation and arrest of Mr. Aiken by the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department on the arson charges in December 2004.
