Investigators explore possible connection of suicide victim and local burglaries

web posted July 1, 2009
EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County Sheriff’s Investigators were in Aiken County Tuesday looking over possible stolen property that was recovered when 37-year-old Martin Jarrett took his own life after a standoff with police on Saturday morning in Bath.

Aiken and Columbia County authorities were in the process of serving an arrest warrant for an assault that took place in Columbia County the night before when Jarrett barricaded himself in his home. Negotiations failed to reach a peaceful conclusion when Jarrett eventually turned his gun on himself after firing at least two shots during the standoff.

Aiken County Coroner Tim Carton pronounced Jarrett dead on the scene a short time later from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Edgefield County Investigators are looking into the possibility that Jarrett could have been involved in the rash of burglaries that plagued Edgefield County earlier this year that ended when Robert Webber was arrested during a burglary on June 3.

While investigating the death, Aiken County authorities discovered a trove of items in the garage that are believed to be stolen goods. Investigators are unsure where the property was stolen from of at this time.

Edgefield Sheriff’s Investigator Phil Ireland, who is heading the investigation in the Webber case, said Tuesday afternoon that it is unknown if any of the items recovered from Mr. Jarrett’s home and two other locations may have come from Edgefield County. “Right now we can’t confirm anything,” Inv. Ireland said.

Inv. Ireland said he would be in touch with the victims of the burglaries in an effort to have them identify some of the items recovered visually, if possible, since serial numbers were not provided at the time of the thefts for some of the stolen property.

Webber has been cooperating with Columbia County Sheriff Investigators in solving a number of burglary cases there. He did the same in Edgefield County until he asked for a lawyer and quit cooperating. He is still being held at the Edgefield County Detention Center and could be facing trial as soon as the August term of General Session Court.
