Criminal sexual conduct charges filed on instructor of Trenton martial arts facility

web posted July 10, 2007
TRENTON – The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a Trenton man and charged him with sexual assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct in the first degree. Nikki Ray Smith, 26, of the 1000 block of Youngblood Road, Trenton, was taken into custody on July 3 after an investigation that began in early June jail records show.

According to police reports, Mr. Smith is accused of touching at least one female student and other inappropriate contact with at least two other young girls. The mother of one of the girls alleged in the initial report that her “younger children were told not to wear underwear under their leotards when they came to class.”

Mr. Smith was said not to be a part of the dance classes but was present during the time the classes took place. Smith’s wife, Jessylyn Smith, was said to have made statements that were “inappropriate,” according to police reports, to some of the children.

Contacted on Monday Sheriff Adell Dobey said the case is still under investigation and he could not comment on the evidence of the case. “I do feel (Smith) is a threat to the public safety,” Sheriff Dobey said and that led to the arrest.

The arrest is one of serious concern as Mr. Smith operates the Eye of the Dragon Martial Arts Academy along with his wife’s Edgefield Academy of Dance at 1556 Edgefield Road, where the alleged crimes are said to have taken place reports state.

Smith’s wife has not been charged with any crime at this time records showed.

Officials at the Sheriff’s Office said additional charges could be pending the outcome of the investigation but would not elaborate.

EdgefieldDaily.com will continue to follow this developing story and will have more as information on the case becomes available.

Mr. Smith has been released on a $15,000 bond and is awaiting a trial date in General Sessions Court.
