Investigations of burglaries continues

web posted July 11, 2009
COUNTY – Edgefield County Sheriff’s Investigators are following leads that a Bath man who held Aiken and Columbia County Deputies trying to serve a warrant for his arrest at bay for hours while barricaded in his Railroad Street home in Bath, before turning his gun on himself on June 26, may have be involved in the rash of burglaries in Edgefield County earlier this year. 36-year-old Martin Jarrett was pronounced dead on the scene by Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton. Since then, ties to Jarrett and Robert Webber, captured in the process of a burglary on Republican Road on June 3, have been a focus of the investigation.

Investigator Phil Ireland, who is leading the investigation, confirmed that the two men knew each other but stopped short of saying the two were working in conjunction with each other in the burglaries that plagued the Merriwether area as well as Edgefield for several months that ended with Webber’s arrest.

“Right now I will just say, it is possible,” Inv. Ireland said. Property found at the home of Jarrett after his death is being reviewed by victims of burglaries that took place in Edgefield County to aid in the investigation, but no confirmation was given as to if any of the victims had identified any property recovered by Aiken County authorities.

Webber, who is still being held at the Edgefield County Detention Center, is facing charges in other Georgia and South Carolina counties for burglaries that stem from the arrest by the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office.

EdgefieldDaily.com will continue to follow the investigation as it progresses.
