MERRIWETHER - Sheriff Adell Dobey has gone beyond the call of duty according to the family of Marion Key, 74, a Merriwether resident who has been missing since leaving his job at the North Augusta Wal-Mart last Tuesday night.

“Sheriff Dobey has been so helpful during all this,” Mrs. Melba Key said adding the Sheriff has personally visited her and said he would do everything possible to find Mr. Key. Sheriff Dobey seems to be a man of his word. Mrs. Key said Sheriff Dobey has gone beyond that duty.

So far a street by street search of the Merriwether area and the route that Mr. Key said he would be taking has been repeatedly searched and has spread to the whole county. A search has been conducted every day since the report came in by the Sheriff’s Department and the Merriwether Volunteer Fire Department along with local residents combed the area in the early part of the disappearance. We’re going to keep looking”, Investigator Chris Aston said on a break with the search team for water and food in the 100+ degree heat index.

Aston’s six person team was made up of deputies of the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department, North Augusta Police Department and the Aiken County Bloodhound Team; both of which also provided ATV’s to search even remote areas. “We are looking everywhere,” Aston said.

Time is getting critical for finding Mr. Key. Mrs. Key has said that his doctors informed her Mr. Key could go “five to seven days” without his medications or dialysis. Mr. Key will have been without medication or medical assistance for seven days today.

The family is asking anyone who even thinks they may have seen the red 1993 Geo Metro, with a towing rig on the front bearing the South Carolina handicap license plate W49579 to report it to the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department at 803-637-5337 or 803-278-1625.

Family members we spoke with today said they are holding on to their faith and the prayers of others. “It is at a point where the only person that knows where he is, is God Himself,” one said. “We just want Him (God) to direct someone to show us where it is.”

The Sheriff’s Department is also holding out hope of finding Mr. Key in time, Investigator Aston said they still hold on to the belief he will be found in time but that time was “getting critical”. A nationwide alert has been issued by Sheriff Dobey and the “A Child is Missing” call notification system, which makes 1000 calls a minute, was instituted to alert the county of Mr. Key’s disappearance.

Editor’s note: The family has expressed their thankfulness to Ron Herring and Butch Bone of Sportsman’s Bar-B-Que and Jerry Bass and family of Old McDonald Fish Camp for providing food and Sportsman’s Corner for providing ice as well as members of the Big Stevens Creek Baptist Church for their continued support.
