Trenton man charged with murder

web posted July 23, 2008
EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest in the June 22 murder of 60-year-old Raymond Merriweather. Mr. Merriweather’s body was found that Sunday afternoon when his wife returned from church. Phillip Anthony Merriweather, 30, has been charged with one count of murder in the crime. The investigation is continuing.

The scene, according to earlier reports, was covered in blood, and several lacerations and abrasions to Mr. Merriwetheater’s face indicate a violent altercation. A stick, which also had bloodstains, was recovered from the home. Merriweather’s body was found with his hands tied behind his back with a phone cord and he was shot twice in the head with a .38 caliber weapon. Both bullets have been recovered. Additional ammunition found at the home was also taken into evidence for comparison.

Results from the SLED forensic investigation on the evidence was returned to the Sheriff’s Investigators this week, prompting the murder charge.

Merriweather has been held without bond at the Edgefield County Detention Center on charges of disorderly conduct and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature scine the day of the murder. Those charges stem from an incident that occurred the day of the murder as family and friends gathered across the street after the murder and tempers flared and Phillip Merriweather is said to have struck a woman.

The nature of the evidence was not included in a press release from the Sheriff’s Office. Information gathered by EdgefieldDaily.com during the investigation is reported below during our ongoing coverage of the killing.
