Sheriff’s Department makes arrest in attack Edgefielddaily.com web posted August 16, 2005 EDGEFIELD - As Edgefield Daily.com reported last week on the attack of a woman in her Hayes Drive home, the Sheriff’s Department has charged Charles Dewayne Curry, 29, of Indian Hill Court in North Augusta, with burglary in the first degree and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. Mr. Curry was arrested on outstanding warrants for drug charges on August 11, 2005 and was held at the Detention Center until a line up could be arranged for the victim to identify her attacker. The line up proved problematic because the victim, a Hispanic woman, did not speak English. To further complicate matters she did not speak the expected Spanish the translator spoke. “She spoke a Tex-Mex dialect,” that is not widely known outside a small area in Mexico said Investigator Robin Newton of the Sheriff’s Department. Investigator Newton said the problems created a lot of extra work, “we worked our tails off on this one.” Mr. Curry is accused of the early morning attack of a mother after she walked her child to the bus stop and returned home. According to sources she was attacked in her bedroom and managed to bite the man and get away. It was then the attack continued and he tried to force her out of the home. It was during her struggle not to be taken at the doorway that she was able to escape and summon help. Mr. Curry is presently being held at the Edgefield County Detention Center on charges of possession of drugs with intent to distribute, burglary in the first degree and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. The Edgefield County Magistrate’s Office has denied a bond and Mr. Curry will remain in custody until his trial. Edgefield Daily.com will cover the trial when it takes place.
