Sheriff's Department makes arrest in
Sportsman's Corner burglary Edgefielddaily.com EXCLUSIVE! ONLY ON EDGEFIELD DAILY.COM web posted August 31, 2005 See video of the burglary here (.wmv format) MERRIWETHER – Edgefield County Sheriff’s Investigators have made an arrest for the burglary at Sportsman’s Corner on August 26, 2005. Charged in the crime is Raymond Stanford Crouch, 33, of Wagon Wheel Road in Edgefield. He is facing felony charges of burglary 2nd degree, grand larceny; more than $1000 but less than $5000, and passing stolen lottery tickets. Edgefield County Sheriff’s Investigator Chris Aston said Mr. Crouch had tried to cash in some of the stolen lottery tickets taken during the burglary and that led to his arrest. Edgefield Daily.com was made aware of the lottery tickets being stolen but withheld that information at the request of investigators in hopes the culprit would try to redeem any winning tickets. An entire rack of $5 scratch off tickets was taken during the burglary with a value of well over $1,600. In addition at least one case of beer was also taken. Investigators are not claiming they have solved the crime just yet. They believe there may be more people involved and say they are continuing the investigation. In addition there is a possibility that there was “inside” help as Mr. Crouch knew the exact location of where money was stored for the next days’ opening shift to begin business for the day employees said. “Too bad for him,” said the Sportsman’s Corner manager who did not want to be named, “I had just changed where we hide the money.” That change, the manager said, probably contributed to solving the crime, “If he had found the money I don’t think he would have taken the lottery tickets,” she said. The money left in the store is a very small amount of cash and only certain employees know where it is left for the next shift. Well known is all lottery tickets are logged in by number and once reported stolen that assures the individual trying to redeem them will be apprehended. “The lottery tickets are a felony charge on their own,” Investigator Ashton said. The interrogation of Mr. Crouch continues as does the investigation. There is a possibility Mr. Crouch, and his possible associates, were responsible for the previous burglary just four days earlier but investigators would not comment on that assumption nor would they confirm that there may be inside help in the crime. “We are still investigating,” was all Investigator Ashton would say. Mr. Crouch is a regular customer of the store sources said. Edgefield Daily.com will continue to follow the developing story as it unfolds.
