Missing girl found, man arrested for kidnapping

web posted September 3, 2008
EDGEFIELD – 17-year-old Latasha Lynn Hilliard, missing since Tuesday has been located and a 31-year-old man is in custody. Missouri police located the two at a convenience store off interstate 24 in Wentzville. Brian Bennett, 31, of Hayward, California is awaiting extradition back to Edgefield County where he will be charged with kidnapping. Miss Hilliard’s parents left Wednesday afternoon to bring their daughter back. Edgefield County Sheriff’s investigator Phil Ireland said a break in the case came when the girl made a call to her mother on Bennett’s cell phone.

Around 11 am Wednesday Miss Hilliard called her mother crying and wanting them to come pick her up and the phone went dead. Once investigators had the cell phone number they were able to trace the general location of the phone. Several times during the day police were close to finding the pair but, “just missed them”, Investigator Ireland said.

Then police got a break as Bennett got on interstate 24 and that gave police a chance to get in front of the pair. The car was located at a convenience store and Bennett was taken into custody.

Miss Hilliard was said to be in good condition at the time of the arrest. Investigators believe Mr. Bennett was the person following her at the time of her last call on Tuesday. Her car was found at a Ryan’s Steakhouse on Whisky Road in Aiken with the keys inside and the car unlocked.

According to the information available Miss Hilliard and Mr. Bennett had been chatting online via their MySpace pages and she agreed to meet him.

Investigators are waiting until they can interview Miss Hilliard before releasing any further information. Investigator Ireland said additional charges are “likely” and that the FBI will most likely get involved in the case.
