Brothers given life sentence for kidnapping of man murdered in Edgefield County

web posted September 14, 2006

AUGUSTA – Two brothers, Alexander and Julio Hunsberger, were convicted of kidnapping with bodily injury in a Richmond County Superior Court on Tuesday. The pair received a life sentence for the kidnapping of 16-year-old Samuel J. Sturrup Jr. on September 3, 2001. Mr. Sturrup’s body was found after a dog discovered a skull in November of 2001 just off Rainbow Falls Road and Community Road in Edgefield County.

The two brothers were charged in connection to the of death of Mr. Sturrup along with Steven Lewis Barnes, 28, who police say was the driving force in the murder. Two others have also been charged in relation to the case. The actual murder took place in Edgefield County.

According to testimony given in the trial of the brothers and investigators, Mr. Sturrup was beaten for an extended period of time before being placed in the trunk of a car and driven to a wooded location off Rainbow Falls Road where Mr. Barnes ordered each of his accomplices to shoot Mr. Sturrup. Mr. Barnes was said to have fired the final shot into the head of Mr. Sturrup.

The Edgefield County Detention Center did not have information as to when the Hunsberger brothers might be transferred to face charges in Edgefield County.

Mr. Barnes is currently being held at the Edgefield County Detention Center. No trial date was available for the murder charge leveled against him. Early indications are the state will seek the death penalty for Mr. Barnes for the murder.
