Sheriff's Department recovers stolen goods before they are known to be stolen

web posted September 17, 2005

EDGEFIELD – The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department is solving crimes before the victims know they have even been a victim of a crime. Thursday Edgefield County Deputy Marty English was dispatched to a report of a found tractor and trailer in a peach field. Investigator Randy Doran also responded to the 1800 block of Mt. Calvary Road.

A check of the status of the trailer and tractor showed now reports of it being stolen. Ridge Spring Police showed up to see if it was missing items from a report they had but that turned out negative as well. The trailer, which had a blown out tire and had been driven down to the rim was tucked away in the peach field. “They drove it about a mile down the road on the rim before they pulled it off the road,” Investigator Randy Doran said.

However, the serial numbers on neither the trailer nor the tractor came back as stolen. Investigator Doran went to work. Tracing the trailer back to its manufacturer, then distributor, then to the private sale he located the owner.

When Lt. Doran informed the owner, John Comley of Ridge Spring, the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department was in possession of his equipment he discovered he had been the victim of a theft.

Investigator Doran said the value of the tractor was about $6,000 new and the trailer was valued at around $800. At this time there are no suspects.
