Sheriff’s Office closes in on suspected serial car thief

web posted September 20, 2007
COUNTY – The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office is closing in on a suspect they believe is responsible for some of the recent car thefts taking place across the county. An off-duty deputy spotted a black rollback tow truck leaving a Jeter Street home in Edgefield Tuesday morning with a white Cadillac. This drew the attention of the alert deputy as a similar tow truck was seen at the scene of another theft the day before.

Patrol deputies were alerted to the incident and stopped the tow truck on Highway 25 just north of Edgefield. The information on the car the driver had on his black International tow truck did not show it was stolen and the information the driver gave to the deputy did not check out. However, since the car was not listed as stolen the deputy allowed the driver and a passenger to continue on their way after gathering their information.

Sheriff’ Chief Investigator Randy Doran said, “It turned out the car was stolen, it just wasn’t reported yet.” However, the vehicle identification number of the tow truck, its driver, and the passenger was collected by the patrol deputy. “We know who he is,” Investigator Doran said.

The recent vehicles stolen are believed to have been sold to an Augusta storage yard that sells parts rather than to a scrap yard that crushes the cars as scrap metal. Investigator Doran said some of the cars stolen recently were “nicer cars” and would bring more money for parts than at a scrap yard.

The Sheriff’s Office, Inv. Doran said, is able to tie the suspect to at least two recent car thefts and possibly more and encouraged citizens to call the Sheriff’s Office at 637-5337 or 278-1625 if you see a black International rollback wrecker at a neighbor’s property or towing a vehicle in the county. The suspect tow truck has a Georgia tag bearing the license JA473L.

Authorities are in the process of obtaining warrants in the cases and hope to make an arrest soon. Although EdgefieldDaily.com has the identification of the suspect we are withholding the information until an arrest is made in the case.
