Edgefield County has a very popular man in
custody Edgefielddaily.com web posted September 21, 2005 EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County has a very popular man in custody. The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office has finally taken a long wanted man into custody with the help of Charleston County authorities. On November 3, 2004 Pioneer Rental, located at 1514 Edgefield Road called the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department to report a breach of trust case. John Robert Armstrong had rented a 3000 PSI pressure washer and a 5000 watt generator for a half day use and never returned the $2,400 items. As it turned out the address he used to rent the equipment was not his address and the case was turned over to Investigator Chris Aston to solve. Mr. Armstrong it seemed was well versed in similar activities and the actual resident of the home said he had been getting mail for Mr. Armstrong and that the Aiken County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI had also been there looking for Mr. Armstrong. A warrant was issued for Mr. Armstrong’s arrest. Investigator Aston found that indeed Aiken County was seeking Mr. Armstrong and entered his name on the NCIC, a national data base of wanted persons or stolen items, and continued to search for him. It seems Mr. Armstrong spent some time in Charleston County where he ended up being arrest for a similar case. Once he was bonded out Aiken County took custody and processed Mr. Armstrong as well. On Friday, September 16, 2005, Edgefield County arrested Mr. Armstrong and booked him into the Edgefield County Detention Center on charges of Grand Larceny of more than $!,000 but less than $5,000. “It was an older case,” Investigator Aston said, “but he’s going to have to pay for the stuff now.” Investigator Aston said it was very much the same as renting a video tape and not returning it, “it’s pretty much a done deal at that point,” he said. Mr. Armstrong will have to work his way through the Edgefield County Court system before his troubles here are over. Once that matter is cleared up he can be released. However, Mr. Armstrong will not be going very far, just to Newberry County with a free ride provided by the Newberry Sheriff’s Department. Once done in Newberry he gets another ride courtesy of Richmond County, Georgia, authorities. Investigator Aston said not all cases are settled as quickly as others. There are those that other agencies pick up as in the case of Mr. Armstrong. One thing is certain in Edgefield County he said; “no matter what, if you do something you shouldn’t - you will see me knocking on your door sometime soon.”
