Series:
Fighting drugs in Edgefield County
web
posted September 26, 2007
JOHNSTON – With a recent drug raid
resulting in over a dozen arrests earlier this month,
EdgefieldDaily.com is taking a look into area law enforcement’s ongoing
battle to eradicate drugs in the county and local municipalities. The
series will begin today and continue over the next two weeks. With the
most recent raids taking place in Johnston we spoke with Johnston
Police Chief Chris Aston who said his commitment to curtail drug use
and sales relies heavily on the Sheriff’s Narcotics Division, “They are
a tremendous help to us.”
Chief Aston said his department is focusing on drug use and dealers in
Johnston, “but we don’t have a narcotics officer and it’s not in our
budget to get one”. To perform undercover investigations and drug buys
his department depends on the Sheriff’s
Office to conduct those type operations. However, that does not
stop Johnston Police Officers from making drug arrest Aston said. “We
still make drug arrests, sometimes from traffic stops or as a result of
another type of crime,” that is being investigated.
With his officers patrolling the streets and staying in close contact
with residents, information of drug activity is one way his department
keeps close tabs on where and who is involved in illicit activity. The
citizens of the town, Aston said, are the first line of defense in
stopping drug activity. That information is shared with other agencies
that also aid in narcotics investigations. With Johnston being in close
proximity to Saluda County and the Towns of, Edgefield, Trenton, Saluda
and Ridge Spring, among others, the flow of information aids all
agencies in fighting drug crimes.
Money seized in drug arrests in the town goes to the Sheriff’s Office
to help fight drug crime. “That was agreed on years ago when they did
away with the jail here and the municipal judge,” Aston said. The
town does get money from a drug arrest if the person arrested by the
Police Department forfeits the money rather than have is seized, Aston
said.
Referring back to the multi-agency
narcotics investigations Aston said, “We couldn’t do it without
them,” and added that there are always operations and investigations
that are ongoing. “Drug dealers are getting nervous,” Aston said, and
that is the way he likes it. “They (the dealers) know we’re watching.”
Part two of this series will focus on the Edgefield County Sheriff’s
Office Narcotics Division and the things they are doing to combat
illegal drug use and sales in and around the county. Part three will
examine the judicial aspect of what a drug dealer faces for their
nefarious activities.
EdgefieldDaily.com commends the fine men and women of law enforcement
that work diligently to make our county and towns safer.
