Sheriff's Department gets conviction on
largest drug bust in county history Edgefielddaily.com web posted October 14, 2005 EDGEFIELD – Edgefield County Sheriff, Adell Dobey was pleased to announce that a conviction had been granted in Edgefield County’s largest drug bust ever. On May 18th, 2002, a tractor trailer got stuck on Padgett Road in Trenton. Inside the truck was 800 lbs. of marijuana, the largest single capture of drugs in Edgefield County history. The truck drew the attention of the Sheriff's Department and the ensuing investigation netted far more than ever expected. 800 pounds of marijuana was concealed inside mantles for fireplaces. Once discovered all those connected to the truck were arrested. The four men arrested in connection with the bust; Freddie Tamayo, Alfredo Arjona, Honorio Guerrero, Rafael Hernandez, were found guilty of trafficking marijuana. That conviction, however, was not upheld until this week. It turned out one of the jury members had gone home during the trial or deliberations and researched the mandatory sentencing that went along with a conviction. “We had to wait on a ruling from the judge,” Sheriff Dobey said. “They had to call all the jury members back to make sure that did not influence their decision.” Once the conviction was affirmed the four men were sentenced to 25 years each for the crime. Sheriff Dobey said that he was very pleased with the conviction and that the estimated street value of the drugs was $1 million dollars or more. As always Sheriff Dobey complimented the work of his officers and investigators in the case. Sheriff Dobey said the next largest confiscation of drugs came shortly after his election when a very large "production field" was raided by his department in which an almost equal amount of marijuana was found.
