MERRIWETHER – Shortly before 4:00 pm the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department was notified of an active pursuit originating in Richmond County. The car being chased, a blue-green Mazda 626, was lost once it entered Edgefield County and Richmond County Deputies abandoned the chase at Murrah Road. A few minutes later a call came into the Sheriff’s dispatch that two white males had driven the car through a yard on the 500 block of Murrah Road and continued down into the woods.

The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Department set up a perimeter within fifteen minutes and secured the car some two hundred yards down into the woods. Mutual aid was called in from Aiken County and the City of North Augusta Public safety as well as the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Sgt. Robert Velasco arrived shortly afterwards with the bloodhound team.

Sheriff Adell Dobey arrived on the scene as well as Chief Investigator Randy Doran and they began to assess the situation. Several calls to Richmond County Sheriff’s Department were slow to be responded to. As additional Deputies and Investigators arrived information was still not coming from the originating department.

By 6:00 pm Richmond County would not return to the scene and without them no one could be taken into custody even if found. The bloodhounds were loaded back into the truck and the search was called off. Deputies were frustrated with Richmond County Authorities.

Reports were the two men were chased across Richmond County then into Aiken County before entering Edgefield County while tossing baggies out of the window. The contents of the baggies was not known but was suspected to be drugs. Sheriff’s Investigators found drug paraphernalia and hotel bills from several Augusta area hotels. “They may have been cooking meth,” in hotel rooms Investigator Doran said. Drug dealers will often times rent hotel rooms to use as meth labs he said. Richmond County Authorities were said to be searching the rooms that had been rented by the suspects.

Also found in the car was a copy of police “10 codes” used to dispatch officers and a police scanner. Cpl. Robbie Harter, Edgefield County Sheriff’s Information Officer said the contents of the car were being inventoried and the car would be towed to the Sheriff’s Department impound.

EdgefieldDaily.com will have an update if more information becomes available.
