Crack dealer gets ten years Edgefielddaily.com web posted October 18, 2005 EDGEFIELD – Another repeat drug dealer was taken off the streets this week as Brandon Simpkins decided to back out of his scheduled jury trial in which he faced a possible 25 year sentence if convicted. Mr. Simpkins, who has previous arrests for drugs, decided he was better off taking the offer for a plea agreement rather than face having the maximum sentence for his crime if the trial were held due to circumstances of some witnesses. In the agreement Mr. Simpkins plead guilty to trafficking in crack cocaine and received a ten year sentence, of which he must serve 85%, or eight and one half years. Another co-defendant faces charges in the case and was said to be trying to work out an agreement as well. A third individual charged in the drug sweep is a juvenile. His case is working its way through the Family Court system. He was given immunity to testify against Mr. Simpkins if the case went to trial. He will also testify, if needed against the co-defendant as his case becomes necessary. "I don't want to jinx it," Sheriff Dobey said, "but in the last five years we have a 100% conviction rate in drug cases." That record, he said, comes from the dedication of his officers making sure they are thorough in their work. Sheriff Dobey said his department has a commitment to remove drug dealers and drugs from the streets of Edgefield County.
