Burglary spree put to an end Edgefielddaily.com web posted October 19, 2005 EDGEFIELD – A man investigators say was responsible for several local burglaries faced first degree burglary charges in General Sessions Court on Monday. Attorney James Huff, who was named to defend the man, prepared Monday for a jury trial and a jury was picked earlier in the day. As the day drew to a close Willie Merriwether, 33, was offered a deal by Assistant Solicitor Irvin Maye; reduce the charges to a charge of second degree burglary and nine years. Mr. Merriwether, who changed pleas several times during the afternoon eventually took the deal and was sentenced shortly before 6:30 pm. Mr. Merriwether was said to have joined together with two others who went on a burglary spree over several days. “We wrapped up several cases with that one,” an investigator said. Before he was sentenced his prior record was read which included previous crimes such as burglary, possession of marijuana, forgery, assault, and resisting arrest. Of the nine years Mr. Merriwether received he will be required to serve 85% or seven and a half years. General Sessions Court is drawing to an end for this session and should be concluded by Thursday. Cases that were not settled will move to the next session which is said to be for one week in November. A jury trial scheduled for Tuesday was postponed due to a spelling error on the indictment. Rather than gather the grand jury again officials decided to wait for the next grand jury and re-indict the individual under the proper name.
